Certified Chemical Companies

Achieve ZDHC Conformance with Chem-MAP Certification through the c-MAP Programme

Chemical companies around the world will benefit from becoming Chem-MAP Certified through the c-MAP Programme, enabling chemical manufacturers to gain ZDHC Conformance Level 1 and Level 3.

Chem-MAP Certification through c-MAP provides chemical manufacturers with:

  • ZDHC Conformance to Level 1 or Level 3
  • ZDHC compliant chemical formulations listed on the ZDHC Gateway updated to show certification of ZDHC Conformance Level 1 or Level 3
  • Recognition of the chemical company’s commitment to responsible chemistry
  • Assurance of chemical supply chain transparency through on-site audits and MRSL testing (ZDHC Conformance Level 3 only)
  • A competitive edge when marketing chemical formulations

How to become a Certified Chemical Company through the c-MAP Programme

Chemical companies who engage in the c-MAP Programme with the aim of being awarded ZDHC Conformance for their products, are required to undertake the relevant c-MAP module(s) to achieve their desired level of conformance:

ZDHC Conformance Level Requirements
Level 1 Module 1: c-MAP MRSL Testing
Level 3 Module 1: c-MAP MRSL Testing

Module 2: c-MAP Chemical Management Audit

Module 3: c-MAP Chemical Supply Chain Transparency

Chem-MAP: c-MAP Modules

The c-MAP Programme evaluates a chemical supplier’s readiness to supply MRSL compliant chemicals. It involves both the testing of chemicals and site audits (including supplier assessments).

Module 1: c-MAP MRSL Testing (Level 1 and Level 3)

The c-MAP MRSL testing module begins with chemical manufacturers uploading their product portfolios (which they self-declare conform to the requirements of the ZDHC MRSL) to the ZDHC Gateway, which entitles them to a ZDHC Conformance Level 0.

In order to achieve a higher level of conformance, an intelligent product selection of a company’s uploaded ZDHC Gateway listed product portfolio will need to be tested against the ZDHC MRSL under the c-MAP testing module, which is divided into two parts:

  • Complete MRSL Testing of Chemical Formulations – a proportion (5%*) of the listed ZDHC Gateway chemical formulations will undergo testing against all of the chemicals listed in the ZDHC MRSL (over 140 individual chemical tests)
  • ‘Smart Testing’ of Chemical Formulations – a proportion (10%*) of the ZDHC Gateway listed chemicals will undergo ‘Smart Testing’ against the ZDHC MRSL chemical groups according to risk. ‘Smart Testing’ uses testing principles which are based upon the guidelines published by ZDHC (Annex A – Quality Control Guidance for Analytical Test Data Supporting ZDHC MRSL Conformance).

* Please note that percentages are based upon the percentages of products intended to be uploaded onto the ZDHC Gateway. These numbers are subject to change, depending on the minimum number of products uploaded and level of risk assigned.

The c-MAP MRSL testing module relies on the chemical testing of multiple batches of the same chemical products, to investigate the consistence of the chemical product supplied and the formulations are required to pass the c-MAP requirements of this MRSL testing programme in order to achieve ZDHC Conformance Level 1.

In order to achieve ZDHC Conformance Level 3, c-MAP Modules 2 and 3 are also required.

All c-MAP MRSL testing is carried out within the analytical laboratory at Eurofins | BLC Leather Technology Centre Ltd., based in the UK.

Module 2: c-MAP Chemical Management Audit

The c-MAP Chemical Management Audit module involves an on-site audit of a chemical manufacturing facility (multiple site audits are also available). Within the c-MAP Chemical Management Audit, the product stewardship practices of the chemical supplier are evaluated. There are six critical areas covered within the audit protocol, these include:

  • Management Controls
  • Chemical Selection and Assessment
  • Chemical Storage
  • Chemical Use
  • Chemical Disposal
  • Chemical Distribution

Module 3: c-MAP Chemical Supply Chain Transparency

The c-MAP Supply Chain Transparency module is a verification process used to evaluate the supply chain of the chemical manufacturer, focusing on supplier and subcontractor management processes.

The c-MAP Module 3 can be subdivided into two parts:

On-site Assessment:

  • Used to assess the chemical manufacturers supply chain, this includes subcontracted activities which are likely to incur additional chemical risk
  • The c-MAP Module 3 assessment is carried out alongside the c-MAP Chemical Management Audit (Module 2)

Testing of Raw Materials:

  • A percentage of the raw materials used in the formulation of commercial chemical products are subjected to the Eurofins | BLC Due Diligence Testing Standard

c-MAP for Multiple Chemical Sites

c-MAP can be extended within the applicant company to include additional chemical production sites. Assessment of multiple sites is viewed positively, as it further supports better management of chemical risk.

c-MAP assessments for multiple sites will be further recognised in the overall c-MAP Programme awards system.

c-MAP Awards

  • Credits are awarded for each of the three c-MAP modules, Modules 1, 2 and 3
  • For each module a maximum of 100 credits can be awarded
  • Upon completion of the full c-MAP Programme credits are combined to provide an overall Grade for the facility:
Site Award Credits
Grade A 250 credits*
Grade B 225 credits*
Grade C 200 credits*
Grade D 150 credits*

* Minimum requirement.

In the case of multi-site audits of chemical manufacturing facilities, additional company awards are obtainable:

Company Awards (Multiple Sites) Grades
Leader Achievement of “Grade A” at main production site and at least “Grade B” for all other major production sites
Advanced Achievement of “Grade B” at main production site and at least “Grade C” for all other major production sites
Professional Achievement of “Grade C” at main production site and at least “Grade D” for all other major production sites
Engaged For manufacturers engaged in the c-MAP process

c-MAP recertification will be required after 2 years.
